PART II - OPERATION SECTION 7 - STARTING Retard the spark control fully, if manually operated, and crank the throttle open about 1/4" to 1/2". On all engines equipped with the automatic spark control, the spark will be fully retarded when the throttle is in this position. Turn on the gas and the ignition switch. Keep the control stick back and pull the propeller through a compression stoke. If the engine fails to start after a few trials, turn OFF the ignition switch and pull out the choke all of the way with Zenith carburetor, or close the throttle on the Stromberg carburetor. Turn the propeller through one revolution and then oscillate it back and forth against compression two or three times - possibly three or four if the weather is extremely cold - until there is a faint spray of gasoline out of the carburetor drain; then close the choke, turn ON the ignition switch and pull the propeller through easily. If the engine does not start this time, it may be "loaded;" that is, there may be too much raw gasoline in the cylinders. This can be detected by a dull hollow explosion or by a considerable amount of gasoline dripping from the carburetor drain. To unload the engine turn OFF the ignition switch and open the throttle all of the way then turn the propeller backwards six (6) to eight (8) revolutions. Reset the throttle to the correct position, turn ON the ignition switch, pull the propeller through and the engine should start.
