PART II - OPERATION

SECTION 5 - VALVE GUIDE LUBRICATION

The valve stems and guides should be lubricated daily with a good grade of low carbon neutral oil - such as Marvel Valve Oil, Springeez, Mystery Oil, Lubreeze, etc. A worn intake guide will tend to lean the gas mixture to the cylinder by allowing air to be sucked in through the guide. A lean mixture will raise the cylinder head temperature and this high temperature may cause pre-ignition, warped valves, or cracked heads. An engine with a badly worn intake guide will not idle properly and the difficulty is often mistaken for carburetor trouble.

Therefore, it is important that the valve guides be properly lubricated. When it is impossible to get a good valve guide lubricant, a mixture of two parts of kerosene and one part of a good grade of light viscosity oil will be found to be satisfactory.

Another method of lubricating the valve stems and guides is to use a top cylinder lubricant in the gasoline.
