SECTION 3 - IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR OIL CHANGES

It is as important to change the engine lubricating oil at regular intervals as it is to use the correct oil. We strongly recommend that the oil be changed every 15 to 20 flying hours.

The AERONCA engine requires only three quarts of oil for each oil change but four quarts may be put in, if desired.

Clean oil cans should be used when filling the engine with fresh oil. The oil should not be left standing around the hangar uncovered as in this way dirt and cinders can easily get into the oil and may eventually do considerable damage to the engine.

When changing the oil in the crankcase it is recommended that the old oil be strained through a 20 mesh or finer screen so that if any metallic particles are found on the screen they will serve as a warning that something needs to be repaired inside the engine which should be investigated at once.

The crankcase should be drained and flushed out with a good light viscosity oil. The sump cover should be removed and the interior of the oil reservoir cleaned, including the oil strainer. The oil filter, if used, should also be drained at intervals. Turning the handle on the oil filter several times cleans the filtering unit. This should be done every 5 to 10 flying hours.

The cleaning of the interior of the engine is a very important point in prolonging the life of the engine. Some sludge and grit will accumulate in any engine after a considerable time and it should be removed as often as practicable as this foreign matter will act like an abrasive compound on the vital parts of the engine and may eventually cause a serious engine failure.
