PART II - OPERATION

SECTION 2 - LUBRICATING OIL

The importance of using the correct lubricating oil in the AERONCA engine cannot be over emphasized. It will be found that the very best lubricating oil will be the cheapest in the long run.

It is essential that the oil be of the correct viscosity; that it be free from corrosive constituents which cause pitting of the all and roller bearings and other important parts; that it have a low pour point so that starting and warming up may be easier on the engine in cold weather and also that it leave a minimum of carbon deposit in the cylinder heads.

The use of improper oil may result in high oil temperatures and oil consumption, low oil pressure and the formation of considerable carbon and sludge. Excessive carbon is usually the cause of sticking valves and rings, scored pistons, clogged oil lines and strainers, sludge in the crankcase and rapid wear of the various moving parts.

The Saybolt oil viscosity's recommended for the AERONCA engines are:

120 seconds at 210 F for temperature above 80 F (Extreme hot weather)
100 seconds at 210 F for temperature (below 80 F - above 20 F - Moderate)
80 seconds at 210 F for temperature below 20 F (Extreme cold weather)

The following lubricating oils listed alphabetically are recommended for use in AERONCA engines. This list should not be considered complete but it indicates the quality of lubricating oils which should be used.
