PART 1 - INSTALLATION SECTION 4 - OIL SYSTEM The AERONCA engine is so designed that the lower half of the crankcase serves as the oil reservoir. The maximum capacity of this reservoir is 4 quarts and a minimum of 3 quarts should be maintained at all times. The oil gauge is located at the top left side of the engine and is of the float and rod type which, when not in use, is held down by a small metal cap which slides over the gauge (See Fig. 3). When the float is in its uppermost position it indicates that there are at least three quarts of oil in the reservoir. The gauge should not be allowed to drop below the 2/3 full position. A 1/4" hose connection is provided at the crankshaft oil inlet for the oil gauge. On the earlier models a 1/8" pipe tap on the pressure side of the oil pump was used for a connection to the oil pressure gauge. The gauge should read 0-60 lbs for the E-107A, E-113, E-113A and E-113B, and 120 lbs for the E-113C engine. A 5/8" - 18 S.A.E. thread tap is provided at the bottom of the engine for connection of an oil temperature gauge bulb. This gauge should read 0-212 F or 0-100 C. There is a 1/4" pipe tap in the sump cover for draining the oil from the reservoir. A brass plug is provided. An oil strainer is provided inside the oil reservoir at the inlet to the oil pump and can be cleaned by removing the sump cover. The oil relief valve is located at the top rear of the engine and should be set to give the correct oil pressure. Turning the adjusting screw clockwise increases the oil pressure. Note that the required oil pressures differ for the engine models. The oil pump is a double unit gear-type pump, one unit being the pressure pump and the other the scavenger pump which returns the oil from the interior of the engine to the oil reservoir. A Cuno all-metal oil filter was used on some E-113B and E-113A engines. This unit, shown in Fig. 12, has been discontinued. The new oil sump strainer is now standard for the E-113C engines.
