SERVICE MEMORANDUM M-65
Inspection and Replacement of 3/32 Control Cables.
To all owners of the Aeronca Models K, KC and CF having Serial Numbers
K2, KC1 and CF1 and up respectively.
"As a precautionary measure the Civil Aeronautics Administration request
that all 3/32 cables, which are the wing aileron balance cable, wing
aileron cable, aileron loop cable, rudder cable, tab control cable, and
the brake cable if pertinent, used on your airplane be removed and
inspected at 1000 hours and that at 1500 hours this cable should either
be replaced or, if desired, a new section of cable may be spliced in those
portions of the system which are subject to wear. The new section of the
cable should be spliced and not soldered, using Army or Navy tuck splicers
of at least five full tucks or at least a five turn Roebling roll.
Approved swaged cable terminals may also be used. The cable, thimbles,
shackles, turnbuckles, bolts, and other parts should be of the same size,
material and quality as the original parts or of such size that the
repaired cable will be of strength equivalent to the original. The splice
should be installed so that no portion of the splice comes closer than two
inches to any fairlead or pulley and the connections should not be located
at points where jamming may occur during any portion of the travel of either
the loaded cable or the slack cable in the deflected position.
Inspection of this cable should include a thorough examination for
fraying or damage of the internal strands. This should be accomplished
by bending the cable in several directions so that broken inner strands
will become exposed and thus can be detected by sight of by feel. This
should be done at every section of the cable of its entire length, paying
particular attention to spliced regions and those sections which, during
normal operation of the aircraft, are in contact with other components
(that is, pulleys, fairleads, termianls, etc.).
At the time of removal of the cable the pulleys should be inspected and
if found excessively scarred or grooved (over 1/32" deep) they should
be replaced.
Record of the inspections made in accordance with the Bulletin and
the results thereof should be recorded in the aircraft log book.
This request is based upon the service experience of the Civil Aeronautics
Administration and is made in an endevor to assist you in maintaining the
airworthiness of your airplane."
If you have sold your airplane, please forward this memorandum to the
new owner.
