AERONCA Memo M-20

M-20 JUNE 28, 1937
MEMORANDUM TO OWNERS OF AERONCA MODEL "K" TWO PLACE HIGH-WIND
MONOPLANE
    SUBJECTS I Control Cable Guard
                       II Servicng Oleo Shock Absorber
                      III Throttle
I Control
Several pilots, when flying the subject model airplane, particularly
when executing right spins have had the edge of the sole of their
right shoe catch on the edge of the cable guard thus locking the right
rudder pedal forward. This same condition exist on the left hand
rudder pedal of the right hand controls. While the pilot is always
able to extricate his foot from this position he may not be able to
do it with sufficient promptness when first confronted with this situation.
To correct this condtion remove the aluminum guard by removing the
screws which hold it to the floor board. Squeeze the sides of the
guard together until the guard will just clean the cables. Fasten
the guard to the floor board with the original screws. Be sure that
the cables do not rub on the guard as this will materially shorten
their life. This should provide adequate clearance between the pedals
and the guard.
II Servicing Oleo Shock Absorber
To fill the Oleo shock struts they must be removed from the landing gear.
Remove the sheet metal screws from the landing gear cowlings. They can
then be spread open and slid out on the streamline wire exposing the
1/4" bolt which holds the oleo near the top of the landing gear. Pull
one wing tip down to the ground and remove the top bolt and one
scissor link bolt. The oleo can then be withdrawn from the landing gear.
With filling hole in the highest position possible completely fill oleo
with Toleo AA oil or its equivalent. Replace filling plug and install
oleo in gear.
III Throttle
Several owners of the subject model airplanes have experienced difficulty
with the throttle on their airplanes. The throttle, when given a
slight turn, will lock and cannot be operated. This is due to a
change made by the manufacturer of the throttle. If your throttle can be
locked by turning the knob, it should be replaced.
