AERONCA Memo M-3

AERONCA AIRCRAFT CORPORATION MEMO NO. M-3
LUNKEN AIRPORT - CINCINNATI, OHIO Nov. 6, 1935 RES
THE MAIN DIFFERENCE between the E-113B engine and the E-113C is that the
latter engine uses Federal-Mogul cadmium-silver-copper, steel-backed, plain
bearings on the crankpins and requires a higher oil pressure. (50-60#).

1 - TO CONVERT THE E-113B ENGINE TO THE E-113C TYPE

    A. Install new No. 760 connecting rods with plain bearings, or No. 760-1
reconditioned connecting rods with plain bearings. (The latter are
offered on an exchange basis for the old No. 683 connecting rods in
       the E-113B engine. See below).

    B. Install new No. 764 hose nipple (45°) at oil gauge connection at rear
of engine. This fitting has a large oil restriction in it so as to
reduce the oscillation of the oil gauge hand and also to act as a
safety device should the oil gauge line break.

    C. Install 120 pound oil pressure gauge in place of the present 60
       pound gauge.

    D. Install a heavier oil relief valve spring No. 306-A in oil relief
valve assembly at top of engine, then set the adjustment screw
about 7/16" out, as shown.... This should give approximately the
correct oil pressure of 55 pounds to 60 pounds gauge with the oil
       at 120°-130°F. or 49-56°C. at 2200-2400 R.P.M.
    E. Complete information regarding the bearings is given in Memorandum
No. M-2 dated Nov. 6, 1935, "Instructions for Installing Federal-
Mogul Plain Bearings to Crankpins on Crankshaft (#687).
    F. The nameplate on the engine should be restamped when the engine
is converted to an E-113C type. Stamp an "X" over the "B" and
and a "C" next to the "X" as shown.

2 - OIL RECOMMENDED

For temperatures above 80°F the recommended Saybolt oil viscosity is
120 seconds at 210°F. This corresponds to most SAE 60 oils.

For temperatures between 80°F and 20°F, the recommended Saybolt oil
viscosity is 100 seconds at 210°F. This corresponds to most SAE 50 oils.

For temperatures below 20°F, the recommended Saybolt oil viscosity is
80 seconds at 210°F. This corresponds to most SAE 40 oils and some
    SAE 50 oils.

NOTE: I M P O R T A N T

Do not, under any circumstances, use a vegetable oil in the engine as this
is harmful to the plain bearings. Under this heading will fall some of the
so-called "break-in" oils, which have a very high degree of "oiliness". It
is best to make sure that the break-in oil used does not have any ingredients
that are harmful to plain bearings. It is necessary to warm up the engine
at idling speed of approximately 800 to 1000 r.p.m. until the oil
temperature is around 90°F or 32°C before flying.

3 - LIST OF PARTS REQUIRED FOR CONVERSION OF E-113B TO E-113C ENGINE.

                                                              List List
                                                              Each Total
2 - No. 760-1 connecting rods (reconditioned) with new
bushing and plain bearings (with exchange of old
        No. 683 connecting rods)........................... $ 8.00 $ 16.00

    1 - No. 306-A spring - oil relief valve ............... .15 .15

    1 - No. 764 special hose nipple (45°) - oil gauge line. 1.10 1.10

    1 - 120 pound oil pressure gauge....................... 2.20 2.20

                                                    Total.......... $ 19.45

NOTE 1 - The Air Associates oil gauge will be supplied unless another
         type is requested.

NOTE 2 - Give Serial number of engine when ordering above parts.

(Prices subject to change without notice)

4 - CONVERSION OF ENGINE AT FACTORY.

It is recommended that the E-113B connecting rod and crankshaft assembly
be sent to the factory for this conversion where proper facilities are
available for making a complete check of the crankshaft assembly at the
same time that the new plain bearings are fitted to the crankpins. The
exchange of the old connecting rods will also be made at the same time.

If the engine is in need of a complete overhaul, it may be advisable to
send the entire engine to the factory. The conversion to the E-113C
engine could then be made at that time. The factory will furnish an
engine shipping box for $3.00 net for those requesting it.
